About Internet Safety
The advance of the Internet has changed many
lives. The Internet has brought us the
convenience of shopping from our homes and
paying bills with the click of a mouse. The
Internet allows you to talk with friends from
around the world instantly.
The Internet opens
worlds of possibilities, but, unfortunately,
there is a dark side to the Internet. The ease
of communication through the Internet makes each
of us the target of spam, which in many cases
offers get-rich-quick schemes and other scams.
On-line shopping and bill paying can open
opportunities for fraud and the misuse of
personal information that can lead to identity
theft.
The best protection
you have when using the Internet is SELF
PROTECTION. You can learn to avoid becoming a
victim of frauds and scams by recognizing them
for what they are.
We are also
concerned about the dangers to our children from
Internet predators. Studies have shown that as
many as one in five youth received a sexual
solicitation over the Internet in a one-year
period. One in 33 youth were asked to meet a
stranger whom they met online. The numbers are
alarming – teaching our children to be safe
while on-line is important. Please read our tips
about
Internet safety for New Mexico’s children.
